Moorhen

Moorhens are not very common birds in the Crowborough area. There are, however, a few sites at which they are fairly regular.

One of these has been CDAA Pennybridge (best viewed from the road), although of late there have been few records. There was one record in 2015, two in 2016, two in 2017, and also one, finally in 2018.

During 2004 and 2007 there were two records at Pilmer Road, one in July and the other in November.

Hurtis Hill has been slightly more regular, but even there they have not been recorded since 2016, meaning that the population there may have gone.

Walshes Park is the only other place where they have been recorded, although so far they have only twice been recorded there, both in 2018. I myself have been to the site once more recently but I failed to locate anything there.

This means that there have only been 24 records of this species in the recording area, and, indeed, there is little suitable habitat, so it is only a wonder that they have been recorded at all, although I have never seen one here,
